The ABC’s of 2SLGBTQIA+

Here at CHANGE AZ we are all either part of the community or allies of the community who have researched, worked with, and have understandings of the culture and lifestyles of 2SLGBTQIA+.

Whether you are part of the community or an ally to the community, it is important to understand some basic terminology used to describe sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex development. This list was made in hopes of spreading awareness and respect to the community.

• Ally: A term used to describe someone who is actively supportive of LGBTQ people
• Asexual: The lack of a sexual attraction or desire for other people.
• Bisexual: A person emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to more than one sex, gender or gender identity
• Cisgender: A person whose gender identity aligns with those typically associated with the sex assigned to them at birth
• Gay: A person who is emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to members of the same gender
• Gender-fluid: A person who does not identify with a single fixed gender or has a fluid or unfixed gender identity
• Intersex: Someone who has physical characteristics that do not align with just one gender
• Lesbian: A woman who is emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to other women
• Non-binary: An adjective describing a person who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman
• Queer: A term people often use to express a spectrum of identities and orientations that are counter to the mainstream
• Transgender: people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on the sex they were assigned at birth
• +: Everything on the gender and sexuality spectrum

​HOW SHOULD I ADDRESS TO SOMEONE WHEN I DO NOT KNOW THEIR PREFERRED PRONOUNS?

• Use “they/them/theirs” for the individual until you have the opportunity to ask about their pronouns.
• Simply ask what pronouns the individual uses
• Use their name until you learn the individual’s pronouns
• If you make a mistake, apologize and use the correct one

​HOW CAN YOU BE AN 2SLGBTQIA+ ALLY?

• Take care of the people in your life who need support
• Let people in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community speak for themselves
• Learn about issues that are important to the community
• Encourage family and friends to be allies
• Be visible and support the community

HOW CAN WE HELP?

Our 2SLGBTQIA+ group sessions are starting!

We offer both groups and relational therapy for people who identify with this community.

While all of our groups are inclusive, and you might be placed into a group based on what issues you are experiencing (i.e abuse, emotion regulation difficulties, trouble communicating, etc.)
